Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Renowned political analyst Kevin Phillips argues successive administrations have imperiled the US economy by a combination of shortsighted policies and a trend against regulation. How dangerous is it if the gas from an energy saving (spiral) light bulb escapes while in use?

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

I have been using this light bulb for a while without any problem. All of a sudden the bulb made this hissing sound and lots of white smoke was released into the air. It had some chemical smell to it too. I unplugged the lamp and put it outside. I opened all the windows and had a fan pushing air out of the room.
How dangerous are these light bulbs if the mercury gas escapes from them? Is there enough gas in one light bulb to be dangerous? Should I worry about my other energy saving light bulbs? What makes the bulb break up like that? I had my toddler in my bed when this happened. Should I be worried about her breathing this stuff? We got out of the room within seconds, but we still breathed some of it.
Sorry for the multitude of questions: I’m worried.
Thanks to anyone who answers.
P.S. There was nothing other than the lamp shade around the bulb or on the lamp.

the exposure to one bulb should not be worrisome.

The MSDS sheet from a mercury vapor lamp is attached below.

What’s the most fuel efficient car that’s made by GM?

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

A fried of mine is going to trade in his 2002 Impala for a more fuel efficient car. It has to be GM because she has $3,000 in GM reward dollars from her credit card.

I did a little looking myself and the Chevy Aveo or Cobolt look pretty good.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.
Oh, and it has to have automatic transmission.

The Saturn Ion isn’t a bad choice. Otherwise the Chevy Aveo. They’re pretty much the two most fuel efficient vehicles that GM offers.

Other vehicles made by GM that get good HWY gas mileage are:
Chevy HHR, Chevy Malibu, Chevy Impala, Pontiac Grand Am, Pontiac Vibe, Pontiac Wave, Pontiac Sunfire, Pontiac Bonneville, Pontiac G6.

the gannett/alexandria daily town talk reports:
excerpt:

Her body was discovered around 7 a.m. Monday in her car in front of an abandoned Bunkie home. The discovery came about three and a half hours after the arrest of Donald Ray Johnson, 23, of Bunkie, who was charged with unauthorized use of a credit card in connection with using Distefano’s card, Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Maj. Harry Normand said.

Johnson is also being investigated in connection with Distefano’s death, he said.

He said detectives were led to the body “through their investigation” and led to Johnson after his use of Distefano’s credit card.

Distefano was last seen Saturday morning at the Paragon Casino Resort and reportedly left around 11:20 a.m. to go to Wal-Mart, half a mile away, but hadn’t been seen since.

Several calls to Distefano’s cell phone over that day went unanswered, Normand said.

Her credit cards had been used twice by Johnson, according to Normand, at Wal-Mart and its gasoline pumps.
